Happy February SRaDC Members!

Last month we began the initiative of setting your eyes toward establishing a personal image. This month we will learn about gathering the essentials for a successful wardrobe.

The E-board has created a calender which displays the Sunday colour, meeting dates, and information on challenges.
* On Tell a Friend Tuesday, SRaDC Members are encouraged to spread the word about Sunday Rainbow Dress Club
*On February 4th, members are encouraged to wear an item from their wardrobe which is rarely worn.
*February 10th, members are encouraged to send in a picture of the outfit they are wearing that day.
*February 18th is Old Hollywood Challenge Day....think Dorothy Dandridge or Cary Grant
*February 24th is dedicated to dressing up an outfit with accessories....think belt for a simple dress or a statement necklace.

Resolution: How to transform your personal style: Part II

The most important rule for every guy would be to buy clothes that fit. Wearing clothing that is too tight or too baggy gives the wrong impression, which is, baggy clothing shortens a man’s torso and tight clothing enhances an unwanted exposure.

Larger Men

Large gut
To conceal a bigger stomach, try to go for darker colors in lightweight fabrics. Avoid baggy t-shirts that hang lower than your pant pockets; instead opt for t-shirts that stops just above your pant pockets. Another helpful tip, wear your pants at your belly button and not below your waist line. The protruding gut is not a slimming effect that displays in a positive light.

Patterns
Choose patterns with hesitation. Pinstripes, large prints and pleating patterns draws attention to the wrong areas and in most cases makes you look wider. Try to find shirts the have vertical stripes or look for darker clothing, which slims out your entire frame.

Skinny Men
The best rule for skinny men is to think in proportion with your body. Anything too big will make you look smaller and anything to tight will make you look like your trying too hard.

Small upper body
Because of your smaller frame, wearing super tight tops shows how skinny you really are. Choose a shirt that is slims; therefore not causing bulkiness and not showing your chest outline. Also, when choosing the right blazer, opt for small shoulder pads. Bigger shoulder pads downs you out while giving you the little kid look.

Break in the color
Wearing one color shows your thin frame, so wearing a dark color on the bottom and a light color on top will not show your skinny frame.

Bottoms up
When selecting a good pair of pants, flat front pockets on a straight cut or boot cut gives you a timeless look while some volume.

Befriend the tailor
As I mentioned earlier, finding the right proportion for your body is very important. If you cannot find clothing that fits you the way that you like, tailoring your clothes is perfect option, especially if you are short and skinny.

Tall Men

Dressing the body
Because of your height, finding clothes that is long enough and big enough will be a huge challenge. Having your clothes custom made or tailored will be some of the few options that you have when buying your clothing. Searching for outlet centers that cater to tall men will be a wise decision. Big department stores, such as Macy's, Dillard's,and Nordstrom (just to name a few) do carry clothing for tall men. However, when searching for clothing make sure that you stay within your body range. So if you are tall and skinny, find items that are big enough for your,but also be conscious of the styles for your skinny frame. And same goes for tall and larger men.

Question: Is Black Still The New Black?

Happy Thursday SRaDC Members! I am particularly exciting about the impending weekend and hope you all are too. I hope everyone did well on wearing Sunday's colour (black). As I've stated before I love wearing dark colours because I find that it's easier to coordinate other pieces with it. However, I just came across an article that refutes this claim.

Shocking discovery of the day: 4 in 5 people look bad in black clothing

For many women, black is a go-to color when it comes to wardrobe choices, because it can be very slimming and it goes with everything. But experts say black is not the universally flattering hue we all thought it was, and that often it can actually make you look old. Ouch!

The main problem with black, according to color consultants, is that it emphasizes dark lines, wrinkles and shadows on your face--sometimes when they're not even really there. Colorist Jules Standish says, "the effect can be as serious as making women feel drained, self-conscious and introverted." To avoid this, she advises ditching hats, scarves and turtlenecks in black in exchange for brighter colors. And if you do want to wear a black top, she says to opt for one with a low neckline, or add a colorful necklace.

If you have a warm skin tone, you may want to avoid black because it actually detracts from your healthy glow and can make you look tired and aged. For women with pale, cooler coloring (think Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman, Liv Tyler, Dita von Teese, Nigella Lawson) black can be quite flattering.

Want to do a quick test? Standish offers up this advice: "Hold the colour up against your face, stand in front of the mirror and look for dark lines under the chin, shadows around the eyes or lines on the face that are highlighted. If there are no dark areas or shadows, you can probably wear black close to your face and look great - otherwise, change your ways."

Sunday's Colour

With the new year we are turning the official SRaDC color wheel counterclockwise to start with black.

Usually, the first Sunday of the month is a wildcard rather than a colour but in an effort to start with the new year the colour black will be worn to neutralize our palate.

Though SRaDC's resolution as a whole is to solidify personal style and closet maintenance what are your personal fashion, spirtual, financal, professional goals for the upcoming year?

Personally, I try to use everyday as an opportunity for a bit of change in my life, but in the spirit of the new year I am trying to refine my fashion and beauty goals to growing my hair past my shoulders (just a few more inches) and learning how to pose when the camera is in my face. I'm a cute girl, but I really need to take a lesson from Tyra on how to smile with my eyes.

Resolution…How to transform your personal style: Part I

I’m not that person who makes countless New Year’s resolutions and breaks them before the month ends. However, this year is different for me. I’m living in a new town, fresh out of college, and starting a new chapter in my life, so why not a new, polished look also.

Every month of this year we will offer a style tip to help those who need guidance with their style. By the end of the year we will reveal our new, transformed stlye.

The month of January will be dedicated to getting to know you body. I had to learn the hard way by buying countless items of clothing that did not work for my shape or size. Once you discover whether those wide-legged trousers look good on you, your wallet and body will thank you. To distinguish between the many different types of body shapes, I have put together a list to assist the lost and confused.

Body Shapes

To truly get the real shape of your body, I suggest standing in a full length mirror while wearing a tank top and jeans or just your undergarments.

A triangle body shape means that your shoulders and chest is smaller than your hips and thighs and you have a small waist. When shopping for this body shape it is important to look for clothing that show off your natural small waist. Empire-waist dresses or clinching a belt over a jacket will draw attention to the waist instead of the hips. A full or A-line skirt will slim you though the thighs and hips and straight- legged pants is also a nice cut that will slim you though the thighs giving you a sleek and sophisticated look. Finally, boatneck tops can broaden the shoulders to balance of the lower half.

The inverted triangle will be the opposite of a triangle, wider on the top and smaller though the hips. Look for full bottoms, such as full skirts and wide-legged trousers to balance the top; the front pockets on trousers broaden the hips. A nice cropped jacket or cardigan will elongate the shoulders to give the appearance of a smaller frame. Adding necklaces and bracelets are wonderful accessories when your want to draw attention to another part of your body. To give more fullness to your lower half, ruffled hems on dresses and pleating around the hip area create curves.

If you have a small waist and a bigger chest and hips, then hourglass fits your shape. The best clothing to accentuate your small waist would be form-fitted clothing such as jackets and pencil skirts. Directing attention to your waist with a belt or a warp dress shows off your curves and adds a bit of classic elegance to this shape. A V-neck shows off the décolletage, while giving your figure a more shapely build. And word to the wise, A-line skirts are your best friend. A hem that stops just above the knee is the ultimate sexy look for any hourglass shape.

If you are not blessed with curves and in need of a defined shape you can count on these tips for a rectangle shaped figure will do you justice. To add curves, patterns and horizontal tops adds shape instantly. Ruffles around the bust or neckline draws attention away from the lack of curves. Structured clothing like fitted blazers and wide waistbands gives a feminine look while adding more volume in the right places. A-line shorts, minis and capris show off the slim legs while also giving fullness.

CURVY
A curvy figure can benefit best from items that lengthens and slims. Wearing boot cut jeans, and finding structured lines in dresses and skirts adds the sleek look that you are going for. Focusing attention to the smallest part of your body is another way to give the illusion of a slim figure. Try necklines that open your chest instead of covering everything up. A good styling tip, v-necks and jewelry around the neck shows the décolletage in a pleasing way.

PETITE
Now, I must not forget the vertically challenged. If you are petite, tailoring will be your best kept secret. Clean, straight lines in your clothing will elongate your frame. Try to keep hems for dresses and skirts above the knees. Find coats and jackets that stops at the hip, which will lengthen the torso. Pants that end at the ankle are great for a petite figure to not shorten the body. Also, prints and patterns breaks up the monotony of one color, but try to not to overpower yourself with large patterns.

Sunday's Colour

2010 is fast approaching SRaDC members and with the new year brings some new initiatives for the organization. However, all of that will be neatly packaged and displayed for you when we arrive back in January. How did everyone do on last week's colour of blue? Can you believe I do not own any blue in my wardrobe?! Tsk Tsk.

Hopefully, this Sunday's Colour will fare better for me since it is purple. Such a rich and lush color and appropriate for this Christmas season. Also, since autumn, purple has been in the stores so it's wildly popular!

Good Afternoon SRaDC members, I wanted to repost the executive board to include Minister Tim. He is such a great asset to our organization and I'm glad that you all will finally be able to see him. His position as VP of Membership, Recruitment, and Performance is a hefty one, but the E-board is more than confident of his capabilities.

There are some slight changes and reworking to the positions and region territories so please note that it will not be listed until it is concrete.

After several complaints I take note that a picture of my face will be posted soon.

Also, I will be taking a brief hiatus from the blog due to several conflicts-I am moving at the end of the month, have a grad school residency at the beginning of next month, and will be starting a new job next month as well. But please rest assure, Megan, VP of Finance, will serve as the interim webmaster so any inquries or questions should directed at Megan (kandi256@yahoo.com) until the beginning of February!

Sunday's Colour of the Week

I found a gorgeous color of blue. I just love how the ocean has a pure shade of blue as if it have never been touched. This week, if you couldn't guess, the color is BLUE. I am a huge fan this regal color ... because it commands attention. Therefore, when wearing this color I believe that you should make a statement. Show the world that you are here, and you look good doing! If all else fails, you have a soothing picture of the ocean to stare at.

Mintues of the Meeting

I. Old Business:

Rick will post his book list about his style influence.
Each week a color will be picked from the color wheel, clockwise. Every first Sunday of the month a “Wild Card” color will be chosen.
Regional officers will be assigned to correspond within the South, Midwest, Rocky Mountain, and Pacific West areas in the United States.
II. New Business:

BLOG- More contribution in the blog. Each person will post at least ONE post on the blog, preferable at the beginning of the month. An optional second post can be submitted of deemed necessary.
-Megan will be in charge of recruiting more diverse people to join to blog.
To spice up the Wild Card of the month, the idea of different patterns, fabrics, or textures will be included to give more range on style variety.
Rick has made a conscious effort to be more involved and devoted to scheduled meetings and his title duties. He has scheduled a meeting with Erika for tutorials on blog postings. If no change has been made from today until December 29, 2009, further discussing will be needed. As a result, Rick will post on his personal style as soon as possible.
Each month will have a theme. January 1, 2010 will begin the first theme, ‘A Resolution:’ to get my style together. Megan will submit a post on January 1, 2010 discussing personal style and how to discover the need to evaluate a change. At the end of the year another post will be submitted to discuss how everyone’s personal style has transformed.
Probation Period: The following members will be on probation for 30 days, and then an evaluation will be conduction at the end of the 30 days. Minster Tim: December 2009- January 4, 2010 and Tammy Curtis: December 12, 2009 – January 11, 2010.
A master list of all the offices will be given to Erika, including all forms of contact information, and all the member of the E- Board will be e-mailed the master list. Furthermore, Erika will e-mail information to each person about their contribution to the blog.
Beginning with the next meeting, each meeting will begin with a prayer.

Question:She's pretty, but her swag ain't there

Singer Chris Brown was recently on Hot 97's radio show and was asked to rate certain female celebrities.

Now before I go on any further, I want to know who gave Chris Brown the authority to rate anybody?

Anyway, he goes on to rate each female celeb he was asked, giving everyone a 8 or 9. However, when he got to singer Amerie he gave her a 6, stating, "she's pretty, but her swag ain't there." Of course this got me to thinking-what about swag? What do you think swag is? Is this a dealbreaker? Do you agree with the comment? Can you have the right look but without swag it's all over?

Honestly, I hate the idea of a man rating a woman. And then his added comment was real jerky. But I do understand what he's saying. I see it everyday, people in the right look, but the swag is still off. I wonder how my swag is doing? Do I even have swag? Am I one of those pretty but swag-less girls? Ahhhhh....another thing to fixate on! What do you think? Leave comments in the comment boxes!

The E-board is slowly making it's way onto the blog. My hope is to bring another E-baord member to the forefront to help bring variety to the blog. First up is Megan, our current Vice President of Finance. Below is her commentary on last week's Sunday colour-yellow!

I was excited to learn the Colour of the Week was none other than YELLOW. Not only do I LOVE wearing the color yellow, I look good in it! This week, like clockwork, I added my usual infamous color, yellow. As seen in the picture above, I chose the casual style seeing that I just made my regular trip to my local Target®. My layering sense, via my sister, is just a little taste of how I coordinate this radiant color into my life. Enter my wardrobe of Colour:

1) Pairing a black top with a black and white patterned skirt, I add a pop a color, yellow, with my shoes.

2) While decked out in black, my alter-ego Mehana, once again I add in my color with a mustard knit bolero (pictured below) that I purchased at H&M (another staple store where I shop). I like to wear a black top, black jeans and black boots. Also, if you’re feeling the look, you can add a black beret to the mix.

November 26 SRaDC Meeting Minutes

Greetings SRaDC members!

First, I would like to apologize for the delay in updated information. With the start of a new organization and the holidays, it was kind of difficult to organize and come together. However, we are back! Below are the minutes from our first official meeting. President Rick, VP of Finance, and Executive VP were present

26 November 2009

1. Colorwheel

The decision was made to rotate the colorwheel by selecting a new color in clockwise order for each Sunday. The new color will be posted on the blog every Wednesday before the preceeding Sunday. In the instance of the first Sunday of each month, rather than color a "wildcard" will be posted. Said, wildcard will feature the use of a specific style genre or accessory.

2. Officers, Positions, and Regional Territories

The addition of 2 positions was added to the SRaDC E-board-Vice President of Publicity and Vice President of Community Outreach and Cultivation. It was voted in a 2 to 1 margin that the current position of Vice President of Membership, Recruitment, and Performance, held by Minister Tim, is on hiatus until Minister Tim can prove himself worthy of carrying the weight of the position.

Additionally, refinement of the regional territories was discussed. Regional directors will cover larger geographic regions and elect chapter advisers for corresponding cities.

3. Decision on Meeting Times

It was unanimously voted that meeting days and times will be every 2nd and 4th Monday at 11p (est).

4. Blog Permissions

The VP of Finance will now be granted permission to post blogs specifically geared toward budget and monetary management.

5. Additions to the SRaDC blog experience

The E-board unanimously voted on selecting literature, movies, and tv shows to suggest to SRaDC members on a weekly basis which will serve as style motivation.

closet case 101

Always fab here with a helpful tip about getting started as a successful member of SRaDC.

A successful wardrobe is heavily dependent upon closet managment. A messy closet equates a messy appearance or at the very least being chronically late. Look at this example of a messy closet:

Okay, I can't front; this is MY closet (see, we never said we were the authority of anything!)

While I always looked great, I truly don't understand how I was able to get out of the house on time for anything. Do you see the first picture. Look carefully! There are hair supplies in the closet just mixing and interacting with my shoes. Do you see the black blazer and the eggplant colored skirt just hanging side by side? And the random colors and styles just tossed in there?! I'm quite embarrassed. Currently, my closet is a bit cleaner. I've decided to put the rollers and hair brush where it belongs in the bathroom. Now my colors resemble that of a rainbow.

So, to get started on your closet maintenance first just think of a rainbow!

Remember ROYGBIV from elementary school? Well, bring it to the forefront of your memory because it will be used for this lesson. For a better example of this take a look at this colorwheel.

Either decide to commit this wheel to memory, bookmark it on your PC or MAC, or print this page out, grab some scissors, and glue it to your daily planner because this will become your daily go to resource!

Notice how the colors morph, flowing to the next consecutive color? That's how your closet should look, not to mention your daily style goal.

First, let's start by sorting the clothing in your closet by color.

Next sort your closet by the style-shirts, dresses, pants, etc. Though you can ideally coordinate your closet by style rather than color, we do insist on using color instead so as to utilize the full range of your wardrobe.

Now let's move on to acessorizing your acessories, shall we? I love the idea of clear containers to sort out belts, ties, socks,scarves, panty draws, bras, shoes, etc. I highly suggest buying several of these then using them accordingly to seperate your acessories. Now this part is a bit tricky if you're not careful. The tendency is to just throw your belts into the container and call it a day. WRONG! Be sure to wrap the belt in a circle to maintain its shape and place the belt in the proper color scheme. Ties should be hung on a tie rack, no ifs, ands, or buts about it! Undergarments should also be coordinated. Fold your pantydraws and place it with the coordinating bra so that each piece is already together when you decide to wear it.

Another tricky part of closet management are the shoes. What to do? Keep them in the orginal box? Buy individual containers for each pair of shoe? Keep them out? This is where you can get creative. In my opinion, as long as the shoe is not stored so as to collect dust I think you can do whatever you please. Personally, I keep it in the original box. And for shoes I wear on a regular basis I keep on a shoe rack. Perhaps, when I am able I can purchase indivdual clear containers to store my precious foot accessories.

Another tricky aspect to watch out for are the placement of pocketbooks, handbags, purses, or whatever you call them. I took struggle with this. For right now I have my handbags placed in a shelf in my closet though I wish I could find another way to store it without resorting to standing on a chair to each it. If anyone has a great way to store several pocketbooks please let me know!

The executive board of Sunday Rainbow Dress Club (SRaDC) is excited to finally present the club's official website.

This is a long time coming! As a young organization, we are steadily trying to grow and bring our message to the masses, hence this blog! And that message, you ask? Developing and cultivating the style, personal maintenance, and professionalism of our youth and those around us.

Here are a few answers to the questions I'm sure you are asking yourself:

What is Sunday Rainbow Dress Club?

The Sunday Rainbow Dress Club is an organization of young, urban, educated and stylish professionals who seek to better themselves and others through personal appearance. However, don't get it twisted-we are not shallow or materialistic. Throughout the course of a few short years personal appearance has taken a backseat to comfort and laziness. Our organization simply strives to bring back pride in personal appearance especially to our dying youth.

What does Sunday Rainbow Dress Club mean?

The title of our organization originates with our founder and current President the Honorable Mr. Richard Belfry (Rick). Though a plethora of stylish clothing options lived in his closet, Rick constantly became frustrated at the lack of variety in his everyday appearance. So in an effort to utilize his wardrobe he began to organize his closet by color, like the colors of a rainbow, in an effort to wear a richly diverse collection of his clothing. Also, as Christians Sunday is traditionally the day that you wear your best. So why not wear your best everyday?

How do you join?

Currently, we are in the process of creating regional chapters of SRaDC. As we expand, we are targeting the cities of Denver, Colorado Springs, Macon, and Atlanta.However, in the meanwhile, to join simply follow this blog and spread our doctrine to those you care about.

What makes you such an authority on style?

Nothing! However, we are here to learn and take what we've learned to the masses.

In the coming blog posts the SRaDC administration will dutifully present our mission, objectives, and processes. Further, we will help our members with style and fashion quandaries which will in itself help others.
